Living in Balance: The Thai Traditional Way of Dhammanamai

Posted on March 31, 2026March 31, 2026 By Nissha Ruang, TM MD

What is Dhammanamai?

In Thai Traditional Medicine, health is not only about treating illness, but also about how we live each day. One important principle we follow is Dhammanamai. The word comes from “Dhamma,” meaning nature or natural law, and “Anamai,” meaning health or well-being. Together, it means being healthy in harmony with nature.

This concept, introduced by Professor Dr. Auay Ketsingh, teaches that health is not separate from our daily life. It is shaped by our habits, our thoughts, and our relationship with the environment. True health comes from living in balance, both physically and mentally.

Health as a Whole: Body and Mind Together

Thai Traditional Medicine views health in a holistic way. The body and mind are closely connected and cannot be separated. Our well-being is also influenced by our surroundings and the people we spend time with.

Although the body can naturally become ill, we can maintain and restore balance by living in harmony with nature. When we understand this, we begin to care for both the body and the mind in a more natural and sustainable way.

Body Health (Kayanamai)

Body health means caring for the physical body through appropriate exercise, adequate rest, and nourishing food. While this may seem like common knowledge, it can be difficult in modern life. We are often surrounded by things that stimulate our senses, such as unhealthy food and excessive media, which can make it harder to take proper care of the body.

In Thai Traditional Medicine, what is beneficial for one person may not be suitable for another. The same food or type of exercise may help one person but create imbalance in another. For this reason, it is important to understand your own body and provide what it truly needs.

It is also important not to overindulge in sensory pleasures. Many things that feel enjoyable bring only short-term satisfaction. By understanding that these pleasures are temporary, and that desire is never fully satisfied, we can make wiser choices that support our long-term health.

Mind Health (Cittanamai)

A healthy mind is the foundation of a healthy life. In Thai Traditional Medicine, which is closely connected to Buddhist principles, mental well-being is developed through mindfulness and gentle discipline. Simple practices such as meditation, loving-kindness (mettā), prayer, or quiet reflection can help calm the mind and bring more stability to daily life.

It is also important to be aware of what we take in through our senses. Too much stressful or negative information, such as constant news exposure, can disturb the mind. Reducing this when possible helps maintain a more peaceful and balanced state.

A traditional teaching reminds us that everything we say and do begins with the mind. When the mind is unsettled, our actions often lead to stress and difficulty. When the mind is calm and clear, our actions tend to bring more ease and well-being.

Since every action begins with the mind, learning to reduce excessive greed, anger, sadness, and attachment is essential for well-being. Keeping the mind steady and clear supports both emotional balance and physical health.

Lifestyle Health (Jivitanamai)

Lifestyle health is about how we live each day. Our daily habits shape our long-term health and well-being. This includes eating properly, keeping our living space clean and calm, avoiding harmful substances, spending time in nature, and reducing exposure to pollution.

Building good habits takes time, but once they become part of daily life, they are easier to maintain. Having the right support is also very important. Kalyaṇamitra, or good and supportive friends, encourage healthy choices and help us stay on a balanced path. When we are surrounded by people with good habits, we are more likely to develop those habits ourselves.

Living in Balance

Body, mind, and lifestyle are deeply connected. When the mind is calm, we make better choices in daily life. When the body is strong, the mind becomes clearer. When our environment is balanced, both body and mind benefit. As one area improves, the others naturally improve as well.

True Health is Cultivated Daily

In Thai Traditional Medicine, health is not something we chase. It is something we cultivate every day through our actions and choices. By living in harmony with nature, caring for the body, training the mind, and maintaining a balanced lifestyle, we can create lasting well-being. Dhammanamai reminds us that true healing begins with how we live.
